  • How to Mention Your Brand on Reddit Without Getting Downvoted

Reddit is full of people asking for exactly what you sell. “What’s the best tool for…” threads appear every day, and many of them rank on Google for years. So why do most brand mentions on Reddit get downvoted into oblivion?

Because they read like ads from people pretending not to be advertisers. Redditors are very good at spotting that. The good news is that honest, helpful brand mentions do work. Here’s how to write them.

    Why most brand mentions fail

    • They don’t answer the question that was asked.
    • They hide the author’s connection to the brand.
    • They come from an account that has never participated in the community.
    • They ignore the subreddit’s rules on self-promotion.
    • They’re one of several suspiciously similar comments posted at the same time.

Each of these is avoidable. Fix them and your mentions start to look like what they should be: useful contributions from someone who knows the topic.

Rule 1: Answer the question first

Start with a genuinely helpful answer that would be useful even if your product didn’t exist. Share what to look for, the trade-offs between options, or a mistake to avoid. Then mention your product where it fits.

If your product isn’t a good fit for what the person asked, don’t mention it. A helpful comment without a mention still builds your account’s reputation, which makes future mentions far more credible.

Rule 2: Disclose who you are

Say clearly that you’re connected to the product. It doesn’t need to be awkward. Any of these work:

    • “Full disclosure, I work at Acme, so I’m biased…”
    • “I’m the founder of a tool that does this, but honestly for your use case…”
    • Posting from a clearly named brand account like u/acme_official

Disclosure is often required by subreddit rules, and in many countries advertising law expects it too. More importantly, it works. A disclosed founder who gives an honest answer is usually more persuasive than an anonymous “happy customer”.

    Rule 3: Mention alternatives too

When you recommend your own product alongside one or two honest alternatives, readers trust the whole answer more. Explain who each option suits best. If a competitor is genuinely better for the person asking, saying so earns you credibility that pays off in other threads.

Rule 4: Earn the right to promote

Many subreddits expect members to participate far more than they promote. Before mentioning your brand anywhere, spend time answering questions in your area of expertise with no promotion at all. Moderators and users often check post history, and an account that only ever mentions one product looks like spam.

Rule 5: Respect each subreddit’s rules

Some communities ban self-promotion entirely, some allow it in weekly threads, and some allow it freely with disclosure. Read the rules before every new subreddit. When in doubt, ask the moderators. They’re usually happy to explain.

    Rule 6: Never fake it

Don’t use alternate accounts to praise your own product, don’t ask friends or employees to post coordinated comments, and don’t buy upvotes. Reddit actively detects this, and the penalties range from removed comments to your domain being banned site-wide. It isn’t worth the risk.

What a good brand mention looks like

Imagine someone asks for a simple way to track clicks on links they share in newsletters. A strong reply might read:

For newsletters the main thing you want is per-link click counts and UTM tags so you can see results in your analytics. Most link shorteners do this. The big-name shorteners all handle this well; if you want something cheaper with unlimited links, I work on Acme Links, which does exactly this. Either way, set up UTMs from day one so you can compare issues later.

It answers the question, gives a general tip, names a well-known alternative, discloses the connection and keeps the mention short. That’s the pattern.

    Checklist before you hit reply

    1. Does my comment answer the question on its own?
    2. Have I disclosed my connection?
    3. Is self-promotion allowed in this subreddit?
    4. Have I mentioned at least one fair alternative where relevant?
    5. Would I upvote this if a stranger wrote it?
